Beginning Monday, February 8, passes for Palm Tran, the county’s public transit system, will look a little different. Printed on them will be a reminder for riders to complete and return their Census 2010 form.
Next month, surveys will begin arriving in the mail for the national head count conducted every 10 years. It takes just a few minutes to complete the 10-question form and mail it back.
An accurate count is crucial in terms of federal funding Palm Beach County may receive for social services and various grant programs. Each year, more than $400 billion in federal funding is awarded to states and communities based on census data. That’s about $4 trillion over a 10-year period.
Census information is also used to determine how local, state and federal district boundaries are drawn and how many seats each state will have in the U.S. House of Representatives.
A total of 500,000 Palm Tran bus passes will carry this important message. Keep one in your purse or wallet or post it on the refrigerator to help remind you to be on the lookout for the Census 2010 survey.
